Did you see a man wielding an axe in Worthing?
Police are appealing for witnesses after they arrested a man who was wielding an axe and making threats to the public in Worthing.
Officers were called to the incident in London Street on Monday (4 April) at about 3.15pm.
A 37-year-old man was quickly and safely detained, arrested on suspicion of affray and taken to custody. He was later released under investigation. No one was harmed.
PC Shaun Moreland said: “We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed this incident. It was a busy time of day and we know there were members of the public around including children and young people. If you have any information which could help our investigation please get in touch.”

Appeal for witnesses following collision on Old Shoreham Road
Police are appealing for witnesses or dash cam footage after a collision between a black Honda motorcycle and a small white Volkswagen van in Shoreham.
It happened on the westbound carriageway at Old Shoreham Road, between Aldrington Avenue and St. Josephs Close, on February 17.
The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries.
Several enquiries have been completed following the collision, and officers are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward to assist their ongoing investigation.
Anyone with any information or who may have captured any relevant dashcam footage is urged to contact the collisions unit via emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, quoting reference 0483 from 17/02.
Man sought in connection with assault at bowling alley
Police have released this image of a man sought in connection with an assault at AMF Bowling in Worthing.
A group of youths were reported to be behaving antisocially – amounting to a public order offence – at the premises in Marine Parade around 8.30pm on Friday 25 March.
Following this, they were approached by an unknown man, who assaulted one of them.
The man pictured on our website may hold vital information about the incident.

Children charged in connection with Worthing stabbing
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised charges against four children in connection with a stabbing in Worthing town centre.
Armed officers responded to the incident in Chapel Road, close to Liverpool Road, around 4.45pm on Sunday 13 March.
A 13-year-old boy was taken to hospital having sustained wounds to his torso, and has since been discharged.
Following enquiries, which included CCTV trawls, witness statements and drone searches, a total of seven youths were arrested.
A 14-year-old boy from Worthing was arrested and charged with committing grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been released on bail with strict conditions to appear before Brighton Youth Court on 22 April.
A second 14-year-old boy from Worthing was arrested and charged with committing grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been released on bail with strict conditions to appear before Brighton Youth Court on 22 April.
A 12-year-old boy from Worthing was arrested and charged with committing grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been released on bail with strict conditions to appear before Brighton Youth Court on 22 April.
A third 14-year-old boy from Worthing was arrested and charged with committing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon (a knife) in public. He has been released on bail with strict conditions to appear before Brighton Youth Court on 22 April.
A 14-year-old boy from Littlehampton arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon (a knife) in public. He remains released under investigation.
A 15-year-old boy from Littlehampton was released without charge.
A 13-year-old boy from Littlehampton was released without charge.
They cannot be named for legal reasons, and the public are reminded that identifying any of the suspects or speculating about the circumstances could jeopardise the right to a fair trial.
Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeatter, District Commander for Adur and Worthing, said: “I would like to reassure the public that we continue to work with partner agencies and the local community to prevent and detect youth violence, and to take robust action against offenders.
“This remains an active investigation, and anyone with any information about the incident is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting Operation Abacus.”
Sackville Road, Broadwater – between 1820hrs and 1830hrs 5th April, a Peugeot Motorcycle was stolen. Cad 1055 05/04/22.
Old Shoreham Road, Shoreham – on 1st April, a catalytic converter was stolen from a Toyota Yaris. Cad 0471 06/04/22.
Shaftesbury Avenue, Goring – between 1030hrs and 1200hrs 1st April, a catalytic converter was stolen from a Toyota Prius. Cad 0071 07/04/22.
Sackville Road, Broadwater – at approximately midnight on 5th April, a screwdriver was used to force a window of a vehicle which was parked on a driveway, nothing was stolen. Cad 0667 09/04/22.
Winterbourne Way, Durrington – between 5th & 6th April the front and rear number plates on a BMW vehicle were stolen. Cad 0322 10/04/22.
Brockley Close, West Tarring – between 9th & 10th April, the front and rear number plates were stolen from a Renault. Cad 1269 10/04/22.
St Julian’s Lane, Shoreham – at approximately 0130hrs 8th April, 3 males were seen to break the steering lock on a moped and move it to a different location, the moped was abandoned and returned to the owner. Cad 0441 11/04/22.
